A Servant’s Heart – Joshua 24:14-24, Mark 10:32-45

Imagine the nerve!  We read this story about two disciples of Jesus and we kind of shake our heads. What were they thinking? A couple of brothers, James and John, disciples of Jesus, come to Jesus and say: “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” Now, right away, we know this is going in the wrong direction. If James and John had come up to Jesus and said, “we want to do for you whatever you ask,” we could understand that. But their question is the exact opposite. They don’t come to Jesus asking what they can do for Him, they come to Jesus asking, and yet almost demanding, that He do something for them!  But rather than looking for a position of power and authority at the right or left hand of Jesus, they should have been looking for opportunities of service. To be a servant in the Kingdom of God means being a slave of all.

Of Lightbulbs and Sunday Shoes – 2 Corinthians 4:1-12, Philippians 2:12-18

Shining like stars in the universe…the calling of the Christian. There’s few things more spectacular than a crisp, clear night, when all the stars are out. It’s a beautiful picture that obviously the apostle Paul was familiar with when he told the Christians in the church at Philippi that in the crooked generation in which they were living, the children of God had a special calling and a unique place. They were to be stars in the night sky, lights in the darkness. And this morning, we want to think about this passage from 2 Corinthians that also speaks about the calling of God’s people to be light, to shine for God.

Once Upon a Time… – 1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Posted September 20th, 2008 by Rev. Peter Moelker | Permalink

THAT IS WHAT SOME OF YOU WERE! With this resounding, powerful statement, the apostle Paul once again challenges the Corinthian church to live out their calling as the people of God. The shameful situation in the Corinthian church, where two Christians felt free to bring their dispute before unbelievers, compels Paul to offer the shocking alternative of walking in the way of Christ. And in a moment of great passion, in a moment of heart-wrenching concern, Paul pleads with the church at Corinth to BE WHO THEY ARE IN CHRIST. Download

God’s Operating Room – Psalm 51

Posted September 20th, 2008 by Rev. Peter Moelker | Permalink

Psalm 51 speaks to us about a time in the life of David when, to him, it must have felt like a trip to the hospital. He had a serious problem. He knew he needed an operation. The extent of his problem reached to the very depths of his being and the result of the operation would have tremendous implications for his life. As we read through this chapter, we find this man David as a patient in God’s operating room and David is in need of surgery. And God has allowed us into the operating room. This Psalm lays out for us the truth that every Christian believer must face the same kind of surgery. It’s the surgery that we call genuine repentance and conversion. So, let’s enter God’s operating room and see a Christian operation in progress. Download
