The Church has been given the privilege of the Word of God. It is a privilege that can be taken away if we are unfaithful as God threatens his Church with a famine of the hearing of the Words of the Lord. Our faithfulness must be to cherish the word (the Bible) but particularly, to cherish the Word of the word, that is, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the one who on the cross took our judgement upon himself when he experienced a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.

Peter begins his letter by reminding his readers and us that the Christian life is lived in tension. We have an inheritance awaiting us but we live in this world with its attendant struggles. We are pilgrims with a promise.

In the final scene of Elisha’s life we see that God promises to destroy all his and our enemies. He doesn’t do it through earthly kings like Jehoash but through the God-Man Jesus Christ who by his death and resurrection destroys all his and our enemies.

Christians should be men and women of their word and in this way reflect the faithfulness and integrity of their heavenly Father.

The Lord is the one who restores the fortunes of his people. He brings the exiles home and restores the inheritance of his grace to them who have forfeited it because of sin.
