In this passage Paul discusses the gift that the Philippians had sent to him giving them and us instruction concerning the spiritual significance of giving to support the advance of the gospel and those who are being persecuted.

Paul had learned to be content in every situation because his greatest passion was knowing and serving Christ. He had not come to this in his own strength by through the strength that Christ had given him.

This passage encourages us to think about worthwhile things wherever we find them, but it also urges us to be discriminating. The embodiment of all of the characteristics listed here is Jesus Christ so our focus must be on him. Paul also reminds us that thinking must lead to practice.

Paul, in these verses, gives four commands which if followed will lead to “the peace of God which surpasses understanding.” It is possible for Christians to obey these commands, to some degree, because of the resources that they have in Christ.

Paul calls two women in Philippian congregation to “agree in the Lord.” The text highlights the importance of unity and harmony in the church.

Paul calls us to imitate him and others who follow his example. He warns against imitating those who “walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.” Those who follow Paul’s example will live lives consistent with the fact that their citizenship is in heaven.
This passage teaches that we are to aim for perfection in the Christian life knowing that we will never reach that goal in this life. Paul uses imagery drawn from running a race to teach that we are to pursue this goal with extreme effort.
